Solvitur ambulando is an old Latin phrase meaning ‘you can sort it out by walking’. Working out, finding out, drawing out and drawing through are all possible connotations of the word solvitur.
My practice involves a connection with these processes - I walk daily in the landscape and it is this experience that impresses into my work.
I collect found natural objects and substances alongside remembered experiences and thoughts. Working with the found organic matter – incorporating them onto a chosen surface I create a journal – building up an archive of the physical and conceptual journeying across the landscape.
It may be in the form of tiny drawings on linen or paper or large scale paintings with oil and pigment. All are informed by my interest in natural history, the pursuit of collecting and classifying my finds and observations.

‘At the point of production, the work is a mix of recall, intuition and deliberation. The discriminating and sensitive procedure induces a trace of an image, its history, its relative significance and a physical embodiment of the passing of time.’
